Memory – Indigenous knowledges and Selvagem

Selvagem: Cycle of Studies About Life is a really impressive Brazilian-based initiative that focuses on ecology, indigenous knowledge, and philosophy. It is no wonder I was so keen to work with them.

Practical booklet on memory systems

I am very proud of the way Selvagem have been using my research on Indigenous Knowledges. When editors Gerrie Schrik and Alice Faria contacted me a few years ago, they described Selvagem as a Brazilian initiative focused on fostering dialogue between various indigenous forms of knowledge and art and science.

Selvagem published an English version Notebook based on one of my library talks – click here or on the image for the full, illustrated pdf:

Below is an email from Selvagem producer Madeleine Deschamps, with many links to work relating to my research and books.

This is a wonderful organisation, well worth checking out the material they produce. A lot in Portuguese, but some English and other languages too!

Dear Lynne,

I hope you are doing well!

On 5 February, we published a new notebook on the Selvagem website, written by Gerrie Schrik, entitled ‘Memoral: memory and memorisation’ (currently available in Portuguese only).

Gerrie was the person who introduced Selvagem to your work and research on memory and ancestral memorisation techniques, which led to our publication of the notebook ‘All in memory’, based on your presentation ‘Improve your memory using indigenous methods’, and published in September 2024.

‘Memoral: memory and memorisation’ is a notebook in which Gerrie draws on your work, as well as other research and references, to discuss ancestral memorisation techniques and provide practical examples of how these methods work.

We invite you to read the notebook, inspired by your work, for which we are immensely grateful. The material can be accessed via the link above or through the Notebooks page on our website.

We will also soon publish English, French and Spanish translations of this notebook on the Selvagem website. These translations are produced by the Translations Group, which is dedicated to translating Selvagem materials into various languages.

We also invite you to look into the Ancestral Memories study cycle, which can be accessed on our website, and is closely related to this subject.

Once again, we would like to express our gratitude and hope to remain in contact and continue our collaboration.

Kind regards,

Madeleine Deschamps
